My biography

Marcel has a Tonmeister degree from the Royal Conservatoire in The Netherlands, a first degree qualification in Music Education and a second degree qualification in Math Education.

Marcel specialised in music recording, live theatre sound, sound design for theatre and teaching. During his studies he took advanced courses in trumpet, piano, singing, music theory, arranging, conducting, acoustics, psychology, electronics, producing, physics and mathematics.

During 20-year tenure at Stage Entertainment Marcel mixed more than 5000 shows over the last 20 years, enjoyed by an audience of over 8 million, working closely with internationally renowned creative teams, designers, composers, soloists, ensembles, orchestras and many musicians.

He was Head of Sound for productions in The Circustheater in The Netherlands. In this position Marcel and his team were responsible for the sound of Miss SaigonElisabethAida, Musicals in ConcertLion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty and The Beast, Tarzan and Ciske de Rat. Marcel was sound operator for The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misèrables and Deputy Head of Sound for Wicked, Sister Act and Billy Elliot.

Productions also include the European premières of the Disney musicals Aida and Tarzan as well Disney / Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins in The Netherlands. For Aida in Essen, Germany, Marcel was member of Disney’s creative sound team.

In 2014 Marcel joined sound designer Paul Groothuis as his associate for the Disney/CML’s Mary Poppins for productions in Vienna | Das Ronacher (2014), Stuttgart | Stage Apollo Theatre (2016), the UK tour: Bradford | Alhambra Theatre, Cardiff | WMC (2016), Zurich | Theater 11 (2017), Dubai | Opera (2017) and the German version in Hamburg | Theater an der Elbe (2018).

In addition to his freelance work, Marcel worked as Sound Design Consultant for The Space Factory in Lyon, France. He was co-owner of music production studio Unicorn Studios in Wateringen between 2013 and 2016. A hybrid studio with a 48-channel Soundtracs Jade In Line console in combination with ProTools HD, a live room, drum/vocal booth and control room.

Marcel taught Live Audio Engineering at several schools for vocational education and university’s for applied sciences.

Currently, Marcel mainly teaches music, cultural art education, mathematics and arithmetic in secondary schools and schools for special secondary education. He also works as a conductor and musical director.
